In a crushing victory, the Slivka team won both first and second places in the Residential College Bubble Soccer Tournament. Congratulations to all who participated!
Slivkans Volunteer at Project Pumpkin
To help celebrate Halloween, Slivkans volunteered with Project Pumpkin, a Northwestern event for local children to trick or treat, play Halloween games, and have fun in a safe environment. Thanks to everyone who participated!
Slivkans Win Homecoming Parade Banner Contest!
On October 16th, Slivkans marched down Sheridan carrying pom poms and an original banner. This year’s theme was “Where the Wildcats are,” so Slivka designed and painted a creative “Where’s Willie the Wildcat” display. The Slivka banner won the title of Best Banner of Homecoming! Congratulations, and thanks to all who participated!
Philanthropy Events
Slivkans have continued to express their enthusiasm for philanthrophy and volunteering.
In May, residents participated in Campus Kitchens, an outreach program that provides sustainable food options to those in need.
Last week, Slivkans volunteered at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, planting flowers by the stingray petting tank.
Thanks to the overwhelming enthusiasm, the project was extended to two days instead of one. Thanks to all who participated!
Slivka Wins Field Day 2015!
This year, through an impressive collaborative effort, the Slivka community won the annual Residential College Field Day! Slivka left the competition with six trophies in total, for human foosball, waterballoon tossing, the relay race, tug of war, Penny Wars (a fundraising event) and the trophy for Field Day as a whole. Slivkans also placed well in other events, including second place for musical chairs. Those who didn’t compete helped with the concession stand, and spent hours handing out snow cones and cotton candy. Additionally, Slivkans had the pleasure of pelting President of the Slivka Exec Board, Austin Dickey, with dozens of water balloons. The weather was beautiful, and well appreciated after a long, misty spring. All in all an excellent day. (More photos coming shortly.)
In other news, the Slivka website was recently bestowed the title of Best in Show in the Residential College Website Competition.
Slivka Makes Foam Swords!
On Monday, May 19, Slivka rekindled an old tradition: constructing swords out of foam tubes and PVC pipe. The swords were then decorated with various colors of duct tape and used for impromptu dueling.
Others made cardboard armor and shields, as well as at least one staff of doom. All in all, a very productive night.
Interactive Clue™
On Monday, Slivka’s IT Committee held an “Interactive Clue” event. Each of the five IT members played a Clue character with a twist. The roles were as follows:
– Colonel Ketchup (David)
– Mr. Eco Green (Bill)
– Miss Blue Jay (Kelly)
– Miss White Girl (Becca)
– Professor Fig Newton (Joey)
Participants had to find each of the characters as they moved around Slivka, asking what they knew about suspects, weapons, and rooms. Was it Miss Blue Jay in the Bike Room with the unrefrigerated left-overs? Or was it Colonel Ketchup in the Rec. Lounge with the zebra-striped perler bead? That last one takes some imagination.
4/20 Events
Last night, in honor of Colorado Appreciation Day (a semi-legitimate holiday), Slivka baked brownies. Additionally, Slivkans got in touch with their creative side by drawing elaborate sharpie tattoos. Using a clever bit of chemistry, the drawings were sealed using a combination of baby powder and hair spray, which formed a liquid bandage-like coating to protect the art. Science for the win!
In other news, Slivka recently decided to adopt the octopus as our official mascot. Hopefully a name will be appearing in the near future.
Slivkan Events Update
The past week has seen a number of entertaining events. On Monday, Slivka welcomed the first group of this year’s prospective students, and played several Slivkan classics, including Humans vs. Zombies and One Night Werewolf. That same night, Slivkans revisited the pleasures of coloring, accompanied by a calming playlist of Sinatra tunes.
Tuesday night included an interactive discussion with Professor Brian Pardo of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department (EECS), a specialist in Artificial Intelligence and Music. There were also freeze pops for all.
Wednesday night, Slivkans made corn-starch based “Oobleck” with Academic committee. Fortunately, no one got stuck in it.
